AllElectronicStores.com Articles - Info About Plasma vs. LCD TV's What aspects should you consider when choosing between plasma and LCD flat panel screens? Of course, many people are concerned about cost while others are only concerned with picture quality. Here we will attempt to consider these two concerns as well as everything in between. Just keep in mind that all of this information is subjective in nature and your final decision should come down to personal preference. A Difference in Technology Go to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and take a look at their display of flat panel TV's and the first reaction that you will have is "wow". The second reaction that you may have is "they all kind of look the same". At first glance you may initially think that Plasma and LCD screens look quite similar. However, the flat screen and thin profile are really all they have in common. As the name would suggest, Plasma screens feature a matrix of tiny gas plasma cells that are charged by precise electrical voltages in order to produce a picture. LCD screens work in a completely different way. LCD's (liquid crystal displays) are basically packets of liquid crystal that have been wedged between two glass plates. The actual images that are created on a LCD screen are done by changing the amount electrical charge that is applied to the actual crystals. Clarity and Quality - The Big Picture Regardless of the technology that is used, what's most important is the performance of your TV. You don't particularly care how a microwave ovens cooks your food as long as it gets the job done in time for dinner, right? To be fair, both plasma and LCD flat panel screens do produce excellent pictures and that is why you can't help but say "wow" when faced with an entire row of these wonderful machines in your favorite electronics store. Aside from the 'wow' factor, the type of clarity and quality that you desire probably depends on what you will be using your television for. If you are trying to setup a home theater then you will probably be happy with a plasma TV rather than an LCD. This is subject to change at anytime because the only reason that plasma may give a better picture is because tend to display 'black colors' more accurately than an LCD screen and this means that you should have better contrast and detail when the picture features dark images. However, this aspect has been steadily improving as LCD screens evolve. Pricing Considerations In general, you can get more bang for your buck if you choose plasma or LCD. If your motto is "bigger is better" then you can certainly get a bigger screen for your money if you go with a plasma TV. If resolution is your big thing then you may want to go with a LCD screen and simply settle for a smaller screen. Just keep in mind that high resolution does not always equal better overall picture quality. Also, these days LCD screens are getting cheaper all the time. By the time that you read this, price may not even be an issue. Other Considerations Up to this point you may have concluded that plasma is the way to go. However, LCD screens do have an edge over plasma in some key areas. LCDs give you more pixels on a screen. They also tend to consume less power than plasma screens and thus run 'cooler'. If you want to hang your flat panel TV above your fireplace then this could be a consideration worth looking into. Televisions with a LCD screen are also generally lighter than similar sized plasmas. This can come into play if you will be doing any moving or rearranging. However, viewing angles for LCD's are not up to par with the plasma counterpart. Plasma TV's also have the ability to produce brighter colors. The Bottom Line It really all boils down to personal preference and budget constraints. Sure, take everything written above into consideration but do some more research. Talk to any friends or relatives that may have a flat panel TV. Talk to the sales clerks at your local electronics stores. The odds are pretty good that you will get opposing advice at all ends. It's your job to wade through all of this 'advice' and come up with your own set of rules. The basic guideline is to go with LCD if you can afford it or go with plasma if you want to go big. |
