Electronics Shopping Tips Let's face it, we can all use some help from time to time. This is even true when it comes to shopping. It is especially true when it comes to shopping for electronics. The first basic tip that we can give you is to use the methods that we have outlined above. Electronics Shopping Tip #1 - It's almost always a good idea to buy your electronics online. Surveys have shown that people who buy online are more satisfied with their overall shopping experience than those who opted for their local brick and mortar retail establishment. These days, many of the online electronics stores offer free shipping. This can be especially helpful for larger items. If you can, do your research online, compare prices online and buy your electronic devices online. Electronics Shopping Tip #2 - In most cases, just say no when asked if you would like an extended warranty. Most electronics won't need any repairs in the near future and in many cases, even if something does go wrong, it would be just your luck for that particular thing to not be covered by the warranty. Also, if something does happen to go wrong, the amount of money that you pay to have the item repaired is around the same cost as the extended warranty. Just be aware that in many stores, they will severely push for you to buy the extended warranty since they often get a commission from such sales. In fact, that can often be the only way that some employees can earn a commission. Electronics Shopping Tip #3 - Studies show that the more research you do, the more happy you will be with the electronics that you purchase. Conducting research can mean reading articles or tech magazines, talking to friends, relatives and sales clerks or simply searching the web for information and doing some comparison shopping. The more informed you are, the better prepared you will be to make good decisions when it comes time to buy electronics online or at your local retail outlet. Electronics Shopping Tip #4 - Try to shop for electronics at a time of the year when prices are lowest and retailers are really pushing for sales. The day after Thanksgiving has traditionally been one of the best times to buy electronic devices. Known as "Black Friday", the day after Thanksgiving is when many people start their Christmas shopping and so retailers make a big push and offer sales so that they can be competitive with their competition. If you do see that the price drops even further at a later date, you can try to get the retailer to refund you the difference or return the item for a refund and then buy it again at the new sale price. Electronics Shopping Tip #5 - Getting great deals means doing your homework. Part of your homework should be investigating the return policies of the electronics stores that you plan to visit. The online electronics stores usually have this information listed right on their website. If you are shopping in a brick and mortar electronics store then you may need to read the signs on their walls near the checkout counters. Failing this, don't be shy. Go ahead and ask a sales clerk to outline this policy for you. Electronics Shopping Tip #6 - If you are trying to save some money then you might want to take a look at refurbished electronics. These are open box items that are sometimes called 'reconditioned' or 'remanufactured' products. In general, there is usually nothing wrong with these types of electronics. People take stuff back to the store for a variety of reasons. If there is nothing wrong with the item then the retailer has to repackage the product and sell it again at a hefty discount. Make sure that you get a manufacturers warranty in the process. Electronics Shopping Tip #7 - Don't forget accessories and peripherals. Most electronics require some type of accessory whether it's batteries, cables, carrying cases, etc. To make life easier, take the time to think about what you could possibly need as an accessory and buy it on your first go. It can be very disappointing to get your new electronic device home only to realize that you can't play with it until you get an accessory. Electronics Shopping Tip #8 - Don't be afraid to ask for a lower price. You might be flat out turned down or they might try to offer you a different product. This probably won't work at the bigger electronics stores but if you happen to be shopping at a smaller electronics store then you could have a good shot at getting a discount. Electronics Shopping Tip #9 - Try to stick to quality brands. Do your research in order to learn who the leaders are in the type of electronics that you want to buy. At first it may seem like you are paying more for a quality brand but in the long run it could actually end up saving money. Big brands are also usually better at customer service. Electronics Shopping Tip #10 - If you buy your electronics online then make sure that you are shopping at a secure website. Secure websites use encryption technology to transfer information from your computer to the online merchant's computer when you buy something. You should see a lock on your browser window when you are on a secure page. For instance, the site that you are currently on is not secure. That is because nothing is actually sold here. There may be products listed on this website but no transactions take place. If you click on a product that you find on this website, you would be taken to the actual retailers website. That is where you would look to make sure that you are in a safe shopping environment. Electronics Shopping Tip #11 - Keep in mind that high resolution does not always mean high image quality. Super fast processing promises often come up short with computers. The bottom line is the bottom line. Whether you are shopping for computers, TV's, or digital cameras, the end result is all that matters. Take a look at the TV screen, watch the computer processing in action, take that digital camera for a test drive, etc. Don't just rely on the specs and statistics. A better benchmark for quality is the actual brand name. Electronics Shopping Tip #12 - Don't fall for anything that is "too good to be true". If you see an electronic device that is priced 50% lower than most of the other competitors, something is probably not kosher. You should always shop with reputable retailers in order to ensure that you are getting the real deal. |
